When Do Bitcoin All-Time Highs Happen?
Historically, Bitcoin’s all-time highs (ATHs) have occurred 12 to 18 months after each Halving. So far, all post-Halving ATHs in 2013, 2017 and 2021 have happened during the year end, in November or December.
The shortest duration taken for Bitcoin to reach its cycle top was 368 days, which saw Bitcoin price surge from around $12 at its first Halving catalyst in November 2012, to $1,127 on November 30, 2013.
In the following two cycles, Bitcoin took a longer time to peak: Bitcoin’s next ATH occurred around 525 days post-Halving, when daily price closed at $19,665 on December 16, 2017. Compared to the first cycle, Bitcoin took over five months longer to reach its cycle peak.
Bitcoin then took 549 days post-Halving to record its third ATH of $69,044 on November 10, 2021. This was 24 days (or just over three weeks) longer than the preceding cycle.
Across the first three cycles, Bitcoin has taken 481 days on average to achieve new ATHs after each Halving catalyst.
Overall, this perhaps points to a gradual lengthening of crypto cycles, as the crypto market has matured and Bitcoin has gained momentum in mainstream adoption.
Will Bitcoin Make a New All-Time High This Cycle?
In the current cycle, Bitcoin has taken 481 days to reach the latest all-time high of $124,128, which occurred on August 14, 2025. Coincidentally, this happens to be equivalent to the historical average number of days Bitcoin has taken to peak post-Halving, based on the first three cycles.
If this turns out to be the cycle top, Bitcoin will have peaked 68 days (or just over two months) earlier than the 2021 ATH, making it the second fastest progression from Halving to new all-time high.
However, if the top is not in yet and Bitcoin’s current cycle timeline is more in line with the 2017 ATH or the 2021 ATH, then Bitcoin’s 2025 ATH may be estimated to correspondingly occur between September 27 to October 21.
That said, it remains to be seen whether Bitcoin will be able to break above the existing ATH, with price currently ranging between key levels as market participants eye potential catalysts including the US Federal Reserve decision in September.
| Bitcoin Halving No. | Date | No. Days to Cycle ATH |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 30 Nov 2013 | 368 |
| 2 | 16 Dec 2017 | 525 |
| 3 | 10 Nov 2021 | 549 |
| 4 | 14 Aug 2025* | 481* |
Bitcoin Breaks Cycle Pattern with Pre-Halving All-Time High
For the first time since 2012, Bitcoin achieved an unprecedented pre-Halving ATH of $73,581 on March 14, 2024, driven by a strong two-month price rally on the back of the US spot Bitcoin ETFs approval at the start of the year. The front-loaded demand resulted in a break in cycle pattern, which may potentially counteract the trend of lengthening cycles and indicate a fundamental market shift.
This came only a week after Bitcoin reclaimed the 2021 ATH by reaching $69,230 on March 8, 2024, which was also a historic first for occurring prior to the April 2024 Halving. Whereas in the second and third cycles, Bitcoin only reclaimed the previous ATH around six months after the Halving catalyst.
