What is GameFi (Game Finance)
GameFi (Game Finance) is the intersection of blockchain games and finance, where the financial aspect of the game are usually powered by tokens and NFT (non-fungible tokens). For tokens, there are usually two types; one which is the actual in-game currency itself, and the other is associated with governance. Some governance tokens might provide additional utility within the game itself.
NFTs are typically used to represent game items, characters, land, and digital assets. In conventional gaming, players do not truly own the game assets and they are not able to trade them in the marketplace. With NFTs, players can now own in-game assets on the blockchain, and have the opportunity of trading or selling them on NFT marketplaces.
GameFi provide players with an economic upside when players are progressing within the game. This forms an integral part of the Play-to-Earn movement. For games that are built on the blockchain, developers can incorporate design mechanisms which allow players to earn gaming tokens while playing. The tokens can either be used in-game or be sold for other assets like Bitcoin or even fiat. The use cases presented above is potentially one driver behind the popularity of Gaming NFTs today.
