The cryptocurrency market throughout 2025 and the opening months of 2026 has been defined by extreme price swings and rapid narrative rotations. While the broader market entered a maturation phase with increased institutional participation, specific sectors, notably decentralized finance (DeFi), artificial intelligence (AI), and privacy coins, continued to exhibit high volatility behavior. This report identifies the most volatile assets by analyzing the magnitude of their price movements across two distinct periods: the full 2025 calendar year and the 2026 Year-to-Date (YTD) period.

Zcash Drove 2025 Volatility With an 812.5% Surge
Zcash (ZEC) emerged as the most volatile top 100 cryptocurrency of 2025, recording an 812.5% price increase from $56.10 on January 1, 2025, to $511.92 on December 31, 2025. Its outsized performance reflected renewed investor interest in privacy-preserving digital assets as regulatory discussions surrounding financial surveillance and transactional privacy intensified globally. As one of crypto’s longest-standing privacy protocols, Zcash benefited from renewed market recognition of its underlying utility.
The native asset of WhiteBIT exchange, WhiteBIT Coin (WBT) ranked second, climbing 129.6% from $24.56 on January 1, 2025, to $56.41 on December 31, 2025. Its gains reflected broader growth in participation in the exchange ecosystem as centralized trading activity accelerated throughout the year.
Monero (XMR) followed closely with a 124.2% rally from $193.24 to $433.18 over the same period. As the market’s largest privacy-centric cryptocurrency, Monero’s performance reinforced the strength of the privacy narrative across 2025. OKB ranked fourth after gaining 122.9%, rising from $49.07 to $109.35, fueled largely by OKX’s global expansion and token burn mechanisms
Artificial Superintelligence Alliance (FET) rounded out the top five, though unlike the other entries, its volatility was driven primarily by downside movement. The token declined 84.2% from $1.27 on January 1, 2025, to $0.20 on December 31, 2025, reflecting a correction across AI-related crypto assets after earlier speculative excess.
This contrast highlights one of 2025’s defining market characteristics: while privacy and exchange tokens experienced renewed momentum, AI-related assets underwent significant valuation resets.

Venice Recorded the Largest Move of 2026 YTD
Venice (VVV) posted the most dramatic price movement of 2026 so far, surging 1,051.2% between January 1, and May 25, 2026. The token climbed from $1.64 to $18.88 within five months, making it the clear leader in year-to-date volatility. This hike has been fueled by its shift in its tokenomics, including reduced emissions and a buyback-and-burn mechanism. It also inked a pivotal partnership with OpenClaw, designating Venice AI as its primary model provider. Furthermore, the growing demand for privacy-focused and "uncensored" AI models has bolstered its position.
SkyAI (SKYAI) ranked second after rising 837.9% from $0.037 on December 31, 2025, to $0.35 on May 25, 2026. SKYAI capitalized on the "Model Context Protocol (MCP)" trend. It successfully tested its MCP Hub, designed to facilitate AI agent coordination, contributing to its price increase.
Siren (SIREN) placed third with a 647.3% gain, climbing from $0.068 to $0.50. The merging of meme culture with AI utility benefited SIREN. On top of that, support from the Binance Alpha platform, including early liquidity incentives and "Alpha Points" tasks, drove significant trading volume and brought attention to the project.
DeXe (DEXE) followed in fourth, rising 458.0% from $3.15 to $17.56. It successfully pivoted to the AI-DAO intersection and onboarded 18 new DAOs in March, leading to a run up in price between March and April.
Unibase (UB) rounds up the group, with a Year-to-Date gain of 377.9%, rising from $0.035 to $0.17, stemming from its position as a crucial "memory layer" for AI agents. The listing of UB perpetual contracts on OKX and the announcement of its Agent Service Marketplace in late April were major catalysts for its price rise.
Unlike 2025, when volatility was spread across established infrastructure tokens, early 2026 volatility has been concentrated in newer, higher-beta artificial intelligence assets. The contrast between the two periods reflects a broader transition in crypto market behavior.

Methodology
This study examines the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization across two distinct periods:
2025 Calendar Year: January 1 to December 31, 2025
2026 Year-to-Date: January 1 to May 25, 2026
Price movement was calculated using the percentage change between each token’s starting price and ending price within the relevant period. Price Change (%) = ((End Price - Start Price) ÷ Start Price) × 100
Tokens were then ranked according to the magnitude of their percentage price movement during each period. Stablecoins, wrapped assets, and synthetic pegged assets were excluded to ensure the analysis reflects market-driven price discovery. All pricing data was extracted from CoinGecko as of May 25, 2026, and is denominated in USD. For tokens that entered the top 100 during either period, the earliest available pricing data within the relevant timeframe was used as the baseline.
