Top 10 Rankings Breakdown
Bitcoin has commanded the largest share of the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization every single year since 2014, but its grip has loosened slightly over the past decade. On June 1, 2014, Bitcoin represented 87.0% of the combined market cap of the top 10 cryptos. By June 1, 2026, that figure had fallen to 64.9% — a decline of 22.1 percentage points over 12 years. In general however, Bitcoin's dominance remains unchallenged.
The headline news of 2026 was when Hyperliquid (HYPE) broke into the top 10 on June 1, 2026, overtaking Dogecoin (DOGE) with a $16.0B market capitalization. It is a defining moment as it marked the second time a pure DeFi protocol had ever entered the top 10 since Uniswap did in 2021, at the height of the crypto bull market following 2020’s “DeFi Summer”. Hyperliquid's entry was enabled in part by its relative outperformance against the broader market, establishing itself as one of the few cryptocurrencies in uptrend during the 2026 bear market.
Ethereum's arrival in 2016 marked the single most consequential structural shift in the top 10's composition. Debuting at rank 2 with an 11.1% share of the top-10 market cap, Ethereum immediately established a two-asset core that has persisted ever since. By 2021, during peak DeFi and NFT mania, Ethereum's share climbed to 23.5% — its highest recorded level — before settling back to 10.6% in 2026 as newer layer-1 competitors eroded its relative weight.
The third major structural shift came not from a new blockchain, but from a new asset class entirely. Stablecoins entered the top 10 for the first time in 2020, when Tether (USDT) appeared at rank 3 with a 3.9% share, and have never left. By 2026, Tether's share had grown to 8.3%, with USD Coin (USDC) adding a further 3.3% after its own top-10 debut in 2021 — meaning stablecoins collectively account for over 11.6 percentage points of the top-10 market cap today, a category that simply did not exist in these rankings six years ago.
Ripple (XRP) Is the Only Crypto to Appear in Every Top 10 Since 2014
Ripple (XRP) is the sole cryptocurrency to have maintained a top 10 position every single year from 2014 to 2026, a 13-year unbroken streak that no other non-Bitcoin asset comes close to matching. In 2014, XRP ranked 8th with a modest $32.0 million market cap and a 0.3% share of the top 10. By 2025, it had climbed to rank 4 with a $127.9 billion market cap and a 4.3% share, a more than 4,000x increase in absolute market cap over 11 years.
What makes XRP's longevity particularly remarkable is that it survived multiple cycles that eliminated virtually every other early-era coin. Litecoin, once the consensus "silver to Bitcoin's gold," dropped out of the top 10 entirely after 2020. Dash, NEM, and Ethereum Classic were all top-10 fixtures between 2014 and 2017 but have long since faded. XRP endured a prolonged SEC lawsuit from 2020 to 2023 that threatened its existence on U.S. exchanges, yet remained in the top 10 throughout. Its resilience reflects sustained institutional and cross-border payments demand that has kept it relevant across every market cycle.
The Early Top 10 Is Almost Unrecognisable Today
Perhaps the most striking finding from the full dataset is how few of the early top 10 entrants remain relevant today. In 2014, the top 10 included Solarcoin, Peercoin, Namecoin, Blackcoin, and NXT — coins that have since faded into near-complete obscurity. Litecoin was the third-largest cryptocurrency in 2014 with a 3.5% share, and remained in the top 10 through 2020 before disappearing entirely from 2021 onward.
Dogecoin tells a different kind of story: absent from the top 10 between 2017 and 2020, it returned spectacularly in 2021 with a 3.2% share during the meme coin supercycle, sustained a presence through 2025, and then was displaced in 2026 by Hyperliquid.
Stablecoins and Exchange Tokens Permanently Reshaped the Top 10 From 2020 Onward
Binance Coin (BNB) first entered the top 10 in 2019 at rank 7, and has held a top-5 position every year since 2021 — peaking at a 4.9% share in 2022 and 2023 Its sustained presence reflects Binance's dominance as a centralised exchange and the utility demands BNB commands across the BNB Chain ecosystem.
The stablecoin story is equally structural. Tether's 3.9% share in 2020 grew to 8.3% by 2026, while USD Coin entered the top 10 in 2021 and has remained there. Combined, stablecoins now occupy approximately 11.6 percentage points of the top-10 market cap — a category that effectively dilutes every other asset's relative share, including Bitcoin's. The rise of stablecoins in the top 10 is arguably the most consequential long-run trend in the dataset, as it signals that a meaningful portion of crypto's largest-cap assets are now non-speculative by design.
Methodology
This study analysed the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation using annual snapshots taken on June 1st of each year from 2014 to 2026, sourced from CoinGecko's pricing data. The snapshot date of June 1st was chosen to provide a consistent, comparable point in time across all years.
2013 excluded: CoinGecko's historical market cap data for 2013 is too sparse and incomplete to produce a reliable top-10 ranking, and has been excluded from this study.
Rehypothecated tokens excluded: Staked Ether (stETH) was excluded from the 2023 and 2024 snapshots, as it is a derivative of Ether rather than an independent asset, and its inclusion would effectively double-count Ethereum's market cap. The next eligible ranked coin was substituted in its place. Bitcoin Cash SV (BSV) was similarly excluded (although technically not a rehypothecated token) from 2019 and 2020 as a contested hard fork of Bitcoin Cash; Tron (TRX) was substituted in 2019 and Tezos (XTZ) in 2020.
Early-year data gaps: For 2016 (ranks 5 and 8) and 2017 (rank 6), the missing entrants could not be reliably recovered or sourced due to the nascent nature of early years data. These missing entrants represent a small fraction of the top-10 market capitalization of that time period and have thus been excluded from percentage share calculations for those years.
Chart legend: The chart displays 9 named coins plus an "Others" category. Others represent the combined market cap of top-10 entrants not individually named in the chart’s legend; it varies in composition each year.
