On August 1, 2024, the Fantom Foundation officially rebranded to Sonic Labs as the project’s focus is shifting to developing Sonic, a new Layer 1 blockchain. Fantom was founded in 2018 as a platform to deliver cheap, rapid, and secure transactions to users. However, as time passed by, various shortcomings came to light including slow transactions and scalability challenges. 

The team developed Sonic to overcome these issues but found that the technological advancements could not be fully integrated into Opera through simple soft-fork upgrade. In the end, Fantom Foundation made the decision to launch an entirely new network with a new token, as well as completely rebranding to Sonic Labs to provide clarity and visibility for users, developers, and the overall community to understand the new direction.

This change includes the establishment of two distinct entities, Sonic Labs and Sonic Foundation, in order to streamline operations and foster innovation. Sonic Labs will be focusing on accelerating growth among decentralized applications (dApps) through various initiatives such as an Innovator Fund that is committing up to 200 million Sonic (S) tokens to support developers and projects transitioning to the new network. Meanwhile Sonic Foundation will manage governance and treasury functions. 

Sonic is currently running its testnet and is expected to launch sometime in November or December 2024. The new chain will be utilizing Sonic Gateway, a Layer 2 bridge that connects to Ethereum which allows the platform to leverage Ethereum’s liquidity and user base while maintaining its own high throughput and low transaction costs. 

It aims to set a new standard in the blockchain space by being able to process over 10,000 transactions per second (TPS) with just one-second confirmation times. Sonic Gateway will leverage Sonic’s own validator network to establish a secure channel between the two chains and also implement a built-in fail-safe mechanism for users to retrieve bridged assets if there are 14 consecutive days of failed gateway operations. 

The existing Fantom (FTM) token will be replaced by the new native S token. Upon the launch of Sonic, holders of FTM can convert their tokens to S at a 1:1 ratio. The S token can be used to pay for transaction fees, run a validator, stake in programs, and participate in governance. It will also be used in the upcoming Gateway to Ethereum but more details will be announced by the team at a later time. 

At genesis, a supply of 3,175,000,000 S will correspond to the total supply of 3,175,000,000 FTM. Additions to the S token supply will be gradually implemented as decided by multiple governance proposals. Firstly, an additional 6% of the token supply, 190,500,000 S tokens, will be minted six months after Sonic launches to be used exclusively for programs within the airdrop as a way to reward both Opera and Sonic users and builders. At the time of writing, users can participate in the Sonic Arcade to earn points while developers can start applying to the Sonic Boom bounty program. 

Part of the airdrop program includes a unique burn factor to encourage airdrop recipients to hold their allocation for longer. On the first day of the airdrop, 25% of a user’s allocation will be liquid while the remaining 75% will be vested over 270 days as NFT positions. Step 1: Connect Wallet

First, head over to https://airdrop.soniclabs.com/ and Connect Wallet in the top right corner. In this guide we are using Rabby Wallet.

You will also need to enter your invite code. If you don’t already have friends on Sonic testnet, you can go through their official X page or join their official Discord and Telegram channels to find invite codes being shared by other users.

Once your wallet is connected, in the left panel go to Sonic Arcade or you can head directly to https://arcade.soniclabs.com/. 

You will need to connect your wallet again in the top right corner. The previous step gives you access to your points dashboard and referral code. 

This step will let you play the games in Sonic Arcade.

After connecting your wallet, proceed to Add Testnet and confirm the action in your wallet.

You can then Get some $TOKEN which is the Sonic testnet token needed to play each game. Do take note that $TOKEN has no monetary value and each game costs 1 $TOKEN to play.

In order to get $TOKEN, you need to connect your X profile to proceed.

Click on Sign in with X and Authorize App in the new page. 

After successfully connecting your X account, you can Get 420 $TOKEN. 

Step 2: Play Games on Sonic Arcade

With $TOKEN in your wallet, it’s time to play the games and earn points! However, do note that because Sonic is still in its testnet phase, players might have trouble with the games loading and executing the transactions. We recommend refreshing the pages a few times or coming back at a later time to try again.

The first game is Plinko, where players drop a ball from the top and let it bounce randomly until it lands in one of the slots at the bottom which offers different rewards.

In the game, you can choose the number of rows at the bottom and the number of balls to drop. Having more rows will offer you higher potential rewards but also increases the chances of not receiving a reward. 

No matter how many balls you choose, their total value will add up to one. Therefore if you have four balls, each ball is worth 0.25 and will get you 0.25 worth of the reward it lands on.

In Mines, you are supposed to find runes on a grid while avoiding the mines. Each square can contain either a rune or mine. 

First, choose the number of mines to be on the board. The higher the number of mines, the more points you will earn for each rune you find.

Then start clicking on the squares to find the runes. The game ends either when you find all the runes, land on a mine, or choose to redeem your points instead.

The last game in Sonic Arcade is Wheel, a game where players can select a reward amount and spin the wheel to see if it lands on juicy rewards. 

In the left panel, choose your bet amount. The bigger the bet, the lower the odds of winning but with a higher reward. For example, if you bet 48x then the wheel must land on the one red segment for you to win. 

Wheel is a multiplayer game so if you happen to be playing at the same time as others, there will be a waiting time before you can spin.

Step 3: Refer Others

In the top bar, go to Points Dashboard or head directly to https://airdrop.soniclabs.com/. 

On the left, go to Referral to get your code and share it with others. For each referral, you will receive 10% of the points they earn.
